    Good morning all

I’m looking for information on behalf of a friend about her grandfather.

His name was F. Sgt. William Ronald Hasler - service number 570160. He was born on 22 March 1921.

Any information about his WW2 service would be really appreciated. Was he always in the RAF? Which aircraft did he fly? Any significant battles he was involved in? I’ve attached a photo of his medals (the two WW1 medals are his father’s).

    Thanks

    James

Thanks. I’ve suggested she orders the records from the MoD. I wondered if there were any ‘public’ records that might show his service.

    hello James

nothing for WW2 service unless somebody else has ordered the records and uploaded them
one of our RAF experts might have his name somewhere hopefully they might be along if they do

Just a thought - his service number looks too short for a wartime recruitment. I read this document as suggesting it’s one of a block issued between 1926 and 1935 to “Aircraft Apprentices, Direct Entry Airmen Pilots, Observers and Cadets” but I have to say I’m not confident enough on the subject to do more than just flag this up as a possible area of research.

    Cheers, Pat

The service number is associated with 34th entry at RAF Halton for aircraft apprentices in 1938. This would correspond to the age on entry from DoB given and the F/Sgt rank attained on demob. Original poster can say how service number linked to individual.

Other than that everything else is speculation until service records arrive (currently running at 3 weeks from online application to email delivery).

Yes, definitely - apologies for encouraging speculation, what you need is his service record.

The question is how you link service number to William Ronald Hasler "F. Sgt. William Ronald Hasler - service number 570160"

Was if from a marriage certificate, an official RAF document such as Discharge Book, from a name search on another online resource or another source?

Asking Disclosures for a specific service number can lead to erroneous returns or nil return if it was not issued to the individual you are looking for.

In this case the usual open source check document of Air 78 stops at William George so most likely has a page missing which contained the index card slip for William Ronald.

If the number came from a contemporary or primary source then i would recommend adding it to the other information section of your online application, if not then best leave off and let Disclosures find the record based on Full name and Date of Birth.
