I remember reading about the letter of thanks from Mountbatten, which if Memory serves me, was in "Only the Enemy in Front". I believe that there was always a Connection with the Commandos, due to the fact that the Recce receieved their unarmed combat training with them in Scotland. Regards Tom
This photo of C Squadron 56 Recce, taken at Adrano, has been posted before but Lesley managed to get a few more names while she was with Frank Barratt the other day. If anyone can add any information to this, or the Caiazzo one above, then please do.
I've posted these photos again for Lesley & Tony because if you are not a member of the Forum and logged in, you can neither see or download the thumbnail images to identify the personnel shown. Men identified from above photo:- Sergeant Tony Anthony Trooper Scott Serjeant Thomas Bill Eldridge Abe Bates Bert Crutch Sid Hutchinson John Gowan Serjeant May Ernest Illingworth Trooper Littlewood Trooper Street Men identified from above photo:- Sergeant Tony Anthony Sid Hutchinson Bert Crutch Serjeant James Campbell, 3246947, Killed in Action 14/04/1945, Buried Faenza War Cemetery, Italy Serjeant Thomas Serjeant Lightfoot Ron Tee Kenneth Norris
Someone called Bob - Suspect from RHQ (as I don't think the uniform was Gordon Highlanders) although I suppose could have been a friend from another unit, can't see many clues from the uniform.
Someone call Pat, again assume that they were in RHQ and looking at the picture I think possibly taken in the Coliseum. Then the 'Three Wee Haufs' D Wishart, Unknown and Pat in that order. Then on horseback I think D Wishart first on left then three unknowns
And some armoured cars with D Wishart sitting in the middle as well as Unknown man with arm round D Wishart, the latter looks fairly early as no medal ribbons on battledress.
I have just posted this, but thought worth linking it here as it has some of the armoured cars. D Wishart was in RHQ and drove Chavasse
One final thing, I have also dug out the four OCA/Reunion newsletters that I have: Autumn 1991 - including invite to reunion 16/11/90 at the Union Jack Club and a golden anniversary bookmark Spring 1992 Spring 1994 Spring 1995 - States 65 attended the 1994 reunion All in original letters with addresses for W Croucher (first three) and L P Smart for last one. I will look to scan these in and post asap
So here we go: 1) Old Comrades Association rules and regs 2) 56 Recce regiment Reunion Association Spring News letter 1992 Next to follow over the next few days hopefully
For 56 Recce types a link to a post that I recently put on the 'Theatres of war - Italy' forum, just in case it passes you by. http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/55927-56-recce-operations-fontanelice-north-of-castel-del-rio-italy/
