    • Ts extract (197pp) from his memoirs, written in 1970, covering his training as a cadet at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and, having been commissioned into the RE, at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham; his service during the First World War as Adjutant to No.28 Company, RE arranging the transport for officers to Gallipoli (April 1915), his own posting there (October 1915) with the 1st/2nd Lowland Field Company (29th Division) and his subsequent service with the same unit in Egypt and Palestine (February 1916 - March 1918) until they were transferred to France during the German spring offensive (March 1918); his service as Commander Royal Engineers in Singapore (1934-1938) and in Palestine (1938-1940); as Chief Engineer to British Troops in Egypt, with particular responsibility for defence works (1940-1943); back in the United Kingdom as Chief Engineer Eastern Command, assisting with the preparations for Operation OVERLORD and working with bomb disposal units; and, after retiring from the Army in 1945, with the Control Commission in Hamburg, Germany as Chief Control Officer in the Building Industries Branch (1945-1947) and in the Disarmament branch (1947-1950). The account contains some interesting comments on defence policy in Singapore in the 1930s, a visit to Japan in 1936, on his anti-terrorist duties in Palestine and on post war Germany, particularly with regard to rebuilding the cities and the housing problem; together with notes on conferences which he presided over as Chief Engineer British Troops in Egypt, August 1940-December 1942.
