I've just stumbled across this POW escaper stories website, which has a lot of information, mainly transcribed wartime letters written by the above officer and his wife:

    https://archives.msmtrust.org.uk/pow-index-2/cummins-ronald-loftus-part-1/

It's a shame the site doesn't highlight his regiment, battalion and personal number, so here they are:

    Cummins, Major R L, MC, 51447, 6 DLI.
Awarded MC for leading his Coy in the Arras counter-attack, 21/5/40, rank Lt (A/Capt)
NB: initials 'B L' in NA database; 'R L' on document itself:
    http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7356401
Reported missing, Middle East, Western Desert, 27/7/42.
    POW, previously reported missing.
Previously reported POW in Italian hands, now not POW (1944 list).
    PG 29, Italy in 1943.

The site also has a section devoted to Major Ian English MC of 8 DLI and there could be others: all the stories are listed by surname only, with no reference to regiment or corps....
