    3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, 5 Corps
50915 War Substantive Major, Substantive Captain Robin Caradoc ROSE PRICE, WELSH GUARDS, Headquarters 3rd Infantry Brigade

On 7th May 1943, Major R.C. ROSE PRICE, as Brigade Major, having received information that the task of 3rd INFANTRY BRIGADE was the forcing of a bridgehead at EL BATHAN, this officer without any regard to his own personal safety, proceeded at once in the direction of the river, and by means of W/T, continued to send back information of vital importance to his Brigade Commander.

Whilst proceeding to the river bank this Officer was informed that it had been reported that there were two Mark VI German tanks in the vicinity of the bridge. Despite this knowledge he showed the utmost determination and carried out a thorough reconnaissance of the river. He discovered that the bridge was blown, and that the area of the bridge was mined. After many attempts owing to the depth of the stream, he found a suitable crossing for infantry and certain vehicles, which he duly marked.

He duly crossed the river again and sought further information from the inhabitants on the far bank. He then returned to the near bank and immediately made contact with the ROYAL ENGINEERS and Infantry and ensured that they were fully acquainted with all information.

The conduct of this Officer that day was of the highest order and an example to all.

[Handwritten addition] I recommend this Officer be given Immediate award D.S.O. ? *previous recommendation forwarded under this officer of 7th May 1943.

    Granted an Immediate D.S.O.

    3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5 Corps
P/50915 Major Robin Caradoc ROSE PRICE, WELSH GUARDS attached Headquarters 3rd Infantry Brigade.

During the fighting of 23rd/24th April [1943], owing to the loss of his Commander and the substitution of another Brigadier at the eleventh hour, with effect this Officer commanded the 3rd INFANTRY BRIGADE, during an extremely difficult attack.

His coolness, imperturbability and refusal to get rattled, largely contributed to the success of the operation.

Although exhausted and worn out with fatigue after several days severe fighting he never failed as a rock of calm and cool judgement and all battalion and unit commanders in this Brigade are unanimous in stating his conduct led to the success of the difficult operations this Brigade was call upon to perform.
