Y is the insignia for the 5th British Infantry Division. It was changed after the war.

Agreed , on uniforms in changed to a white Y on a black circle postwar.
Wartime vehicles already carried that type of marking.

black circle with white Y worn December 1946 , as can be seen in this photo.

Your Dad was in #51 Primary Training Wing in 1943 - the other number looks like the authority to post that gem

SOS BNAF MEF= Struck off strength (of the unit), British North Africa Force, Middle East Force
ME TOS CMF= Middle East, Taken on strength (of the unit), Central Mediterranean Force
Emb for BLA TOS= Embarked for British Liberation Army, Taken on Strength
BAOR= British Army of the Rhine
CMP TR SCH BAOR= Corps of Military Police Training School, British Army of the Rhine

It might be a good idea to edit the title of the thread as it appears he spent 19 months in 5 Recce. It will attract more members with Recce interests

My father was in 56 Recce and he was transferred to the North Irish Horse and then to the Hussars. I think the main part of your father's war was in 5 Recce

Edit: would it be possible to post the records on here please, it would help members more to decipher them. I presume you have the Army B103 forms?-these are the ones with a lot more information on them

    I agree with Owen

My records show that the 13/18th Hussars came under command 5 Infantry Division in October 1945 and were in a variety of locations in the Harz Mountains in the Goslar area before settling in Brunswick

They actually replaced 5 Recce Regiment in Vienenburg in October 1945.

    Ganga.

If your father was in 5 Recce Regt from Mar-Jun 44, that would place him at Anzio as part of 5 BR Inf Div.
