I've just come back from TNA and completely failed in trying to locate the war diary for the northamptons during this time, i may be wrong but the dates were missing from the war diary. I was wondering whether anyone had any accounts of the battalions operations in Tunisia between the 25th and 30th November? I have fords battleaxe, the diaries if 11 bde, 1st army and 78 div, but was hoping someone had a regimental history? Ill post some accounts online, but would appreciate it if anyone could add anything new.
I have Jervois' 'History of the Northamptonshire Regt.' Is there anything specific that you're looking for ? To summarize :- On the 24th, they were eight miles south west of Medjez which was to be captured at first light on the 25th. They took their first casualties on the 25th. They entered Medjez which had been abandoned on the 26th and were there until 28th November. On the night of 27th / 28th, TCVs took them forward to within three miles of Tebourba in preparation for an attack on Djedeida. Despite co-operating with US tanks, they took heavy casualties and failed to capture Djedeida. They were relieved on the night of 29th by 2nd Hampshires and went into reserve near Tebourba. Let me know if you need a scan or two.
While Rick Atkinson gets a lot of criticism for his technical goofs about the British Army, he does cover the fighting at Tebourba and the British role there. If you can find a copy of An Army at Dawn, you may get some references from it.
couple of pages from 78th Div history as you didnt list it I assume you havent got it?. hope it helps
