I am researching Franciszek Sadowski who died 30/8/47 aged 35 and buried at Chester ( Blacon) Cemetery war section in Cheshire. The only information that I have on him is that he was with “5 Baon SK” Polish Army. Does anyone know what 5 Baon SK means? I think they were staying in a resettlement camp in the south of England so I don’t know why he was in Chester. Any thoughts please. TIA

Google Translate had no answer to what Baon meant in Polish. However this document states it is Polish for battalion. It may help with others points: 2 It refers to where 5 Baon SK was based at Gosfield Airfield, Halstead, Essex after WW2.

The battalion was @ Monte Cassino. Search with Control F for 5 Baon SK: 3 DSK - "R" - krzyz.montecassino.eu

For the wider context please read: Polish Resettlement Corps - Wikipedia

It is possible that your subject fell into German custody until liberated in Italy:
From: 2nd Polish Corps (Polish Armed Forces in the West) - Wikipedia

The later link has a section on organization and there was only one 5 / 5th Battalion, namely the 5th Carpathian Rifle Battalion.

I would suggest he had been discharged from the Polish Resettlement Corps, which ended its role in 1949.

There is a MoD Office that deals with Polish matters, a member here (CL1) knows the details:
    .

The last link states the APC Office deal with all Poles who served. They also say start with The Sikorsky Institute.
