Looks possible then, any sign of a Gas-Works in the area?

I've just returned from a somewhat disappointing guided tour of Arnhem. On the trip I met a lady whose uncle was killed on 13th April 1945 with the 4th Lincolnshire Regiment in the operation to finally drive the Germans out of Arnhem. She was the first family member to visit his grave. She had no idea what had happened to him and only knew his name, rank and serial no.

I have been able to find out the basics for her from Wikipedia but if anyone has any detailed info on the op. I'd love to be able to pass it on to her and her family.

    Thanks!

    Jonathan

As promised Jonathan, I copied the 4th Lincs war diary for April 1945 today and no surprises, the relative of the lady you met was not mentioned. Names of other ranks were not not listed in this diary.

There were 44 pages of pencil written longhand diaries which are difficult to read but very detailed indeed and a shortened version of about 10 typed pages.

    Will PM you tomorrow.

    Regards - Robert

One thing I forgot to mention if anyones interested, is that the CO of the 4th Lincolns, Lt Col F P Barclay, kept a personal diary and recorded in it every citation made from MID's upward for 1944 and 1945. The diary is tucked in an unmarked envelope along with the war diary for 1944.

Gentlemen, this was the first query that I have posted on this forum and it's obvious that you are as keen and knowledgeable about your subject as my pals on the Great War Forum (not all fora are like that, believe me!).

On behalf of the lady concerned, Julie, can I thank you for all your time and trouble, particulalry Robert who has gone more than the 'extra mile'. She is overwhelmed to find out what happened to her uncle.

    Thanks, lads. A great response!

    Jonathan
