I thought maybe bad but it doesn't make sense - unless he missed out the word news i.e. "this bad news coming from forward areas"?

That seems the most probable explanation, unless the preceding sentence has any bearing on it?

If not, then I'd transcribe it as "This bad [news] coming from forward areas", using the square brackets to show that the word 'news' is an editor’s addition in order to improve legibility.

No, thats the full entry for that day (29/7/42) I'll take your advice and put news in brackets. Will post diary on here when I've done transcribing.

Another one, it looks like V.L. shoots. in regard to firing practice. could also be a lower case 't.l.' but I don't think so.

I see by the diary entry it really doesn't refer to anything does it? I thought perhaps illness related.

The other one looks like V.L, but it could be lower case r upper case L.

It looks like the word "bad", but the sentence is grammatically flawed due to a word being missed. The sentence might have been "This is bad coming from forward areas" Or maybe they meant to say "It is bad coming from forward areas"

Try comparing the letters in the word "bad" with how they are written in other words in the diary that use those same letters.

It looks like the second letter is definitely a capitalized "L", so you would assume that the other letter is a capitalized "V". It wouldn't really make sense to capitalize the second letter and not the first.

Definitately VL Shoot, as explained below:

VL Shoot An Air shoot, where the pilot would fire a Very Light before signalling his altitude, while the Gun Position Officer followed the aircraft along the edge of his protractor, his Ack reading the final angle of sight.

Thanks for that, Phil, I googled VL Shoot An Air shoot, where the pilot would fire a Very Light before signalling his altitude, while the Gun Position Officer followed the aircraft along the edge of his protractor, his Ack reading the final angle of sight. for more info and came up with a very interesting document called: Glossary of Royal Artillery Terms and Abbreviations would the author of that be yourself? :D :D excellent work.

I would try and be modest, but I can't, :D, Yes, I am the author of that particular work, I was hoping to produce a larger second edition, but the publishers tell me it isn't selling so it will not happen.

I'm happy to try and answer any queries reference terms and abbreviation.

Yes, that is a sample that was posted some years ago, the actual book is 320 pages long. The product of much research and a lot of writing. Still I was honoured once by being asked by a senior Gunner officer if I had been an Instuctor in Gunnery, which as I hadn't was, to me at least, a great compliment:lol:

I would say that the writer is referring to a REME L.A.D. i.e - three or more fitters/mechanics etc. coming from the forward area with dysentry and deserts sores was more than likely to be the sense of that report...
    Cheers
