Hi RP, I was doing some research for a guy I met who's Grandad was in 46 but problem was he went to Burma and to my knowledge none of 46 were there, I then........ given what I was told had a feeling he was involved with 385 Detachment RM, but then I lost touch with the guy I did have his Grandad's name somewhere but sods law I cant find it......... there may be an outside chance I can get in touch again but regardless any info you can offer by way of names etc would be of use to future people with 46 intrest, many thanks Jason.

hi - to my knowledge 46 didn't go to Burma - the unit was formed in August 1943 and initially trained in Scotland until moving south to join the brigade at Worthing and completing the training on 18th dec 1944. In April 1944 they moved to Isle of Wight to prepare for D Day. their actions centered around Normandy/France/Germany and were rested in 1945 having spent time in Lubeck - my father spoke of being prepared to go to the far east but it never happened after the A bomb was dropped. I have full list of all serving men in 46 by troop and a complete history of their actions -

RP, no I knew 46 did not go to Burma but my friends Grandad was with them at some stage......... and I would much appreciate seeing that list of 46 names, are you able to post it:unsure: I know Chris's Grandad was Welsh and this is reflected in the name which I would know if I saw it..... in the meantime I will try to make contact with him many thanks Jason.

46 RM Commando were the first British Unit to cross the Rhine. If this is Wesel then it is likely be 46RM although I have a feeling that a second RM Commando was not far behind (possibly 47RM?).

However this is unlikely to be your father's troop as these Marines are operating Vickers MMGs and must have come from the heavy weapons troop - which was "S troop".

Z Troop would be an infantry troop - using brens, thompson sub machine guns and rifles.

Sorry also meant to add that only two RM Commandos were sent to the Far East - 42RM and 44RM Commando.

    Hi,

His name R T Ghest, Bob or Bo to his mates. Unsure which section he was in so if you or anyone could help I'd appreciate it. I have 'the book' telling the story of the unit and quite a large collection of fots taken when the unit was in Germany. I have also been compiling a unit diary cross referencing with info from cmdo other units. I can't confirm the picture is of Wesel but I have seen it many times and always titled as Wesel.

    Cheers. :)

    Hi Ross

Wonder if you can help me. My dad was in 46 Commandos during WW2 - he spoke of parachuting and being in France (he named my sister after a woman who helped save his life - a french couple). He was shot in the elbow and ankle. His name was Private John McKay and he served 1939 - 45 I think. Would appreciate any help whatsoever. Thanks, Allison58
