    Paul,

you are right, John William Knight MiD. Do have any further details. I wasnt sure what rank he was on joining 44 Recce, but at some stage he did get a promotion to Capt.

    regards

Hi - I am hoping someone may be able to help with some research. An old friend of mines father was in 44 Recce from Oct 44 through to Dec 45 when I believed he was in Trieste. I have his fathers war record but info on it is quite sparse. How might I find out which squadron/troop he was in?

I believe he was with Warwickshire Yeomanry for the year before he joined 44th in the Middle East.

Anything would be helpful. I am going to Kew to view War Diary of 44th in a couple of weeks which may help with some more background on where he was and what he did and plan to go to Italy to retrace the 44th route from Oct 44 - Dec 45.

    Many thanks
    Duncan

    Welcome to the forum.

If your friend's father has only a sparse record it could be it is a typed-up copy which they used to issue quite a few years ago. Nowadays the MOD usually supply the FULL record on payment of a 30 pounds fee and I suggest he gets them in the first instance

Have a look at my father's army records (he was in 56 Recce) and you will see they are quite detailed here:

You could always post up the details of the records you have too.

In the 56 Recce war dairies and appendices it did list the names of the men in each squadron; they are quite detailed, so possibly his father could be listed somewhere.

I'm very late t the party here but wanted to say thanks for the post!

My Grandfather is top row third from the left (Bennett), I'm about to start researching his time in Africa and Italy as soon as I get his service records from the MOD!

Would be really interested to hear from any others with ties to this pic!!

    Hi Tony
Thanks for doing that....my father is 4th from left (Jim Howell).I am looking for a really good quality copy to frame with his MC - do you have one or would the picture you posted be adequate?
By the way he turned 96 last month and lives in Johannesburg

Hi, unfortunately the photo is from a printed document and therefore made up of lots of dots. I have tried rescanning at the highest resolution; it increases the file size to 18mb but just makes the dots clearer and doesn’t improve the image from that posted.

Sorry I can’t help. My regards to a Recce veteran.

    Hi,
Just to inform those on the forum that my grandfather Jim Howell passed away peacefully last Friday at the age of 97.
I have found a few of his personal photos of his time in Italy (with annotations) that feature various officers from the 44th Reece! I will do my best to get them up on the forum over the next couple of weeks.

    Cheers,
    James
