Hi all, I have just joined and trying to follow my wife’s grandfather’s war. I have a copy of his service records and he was taken to 130 field ambulance in September 1944, which I believe was in Tilly at the time. Then transferred to General Hospital later in September, which again I believe was the 6th based at Rouen. He then rejoined his unit (5th Dorsets) after a spell in 37RHU. However, he was taken to 129 field ambulance in December 1944until April 1945, which seems like a long time. Any ideas where 129were during this time? Thanks in advance
Maybe have a gander through this thread - 129 Field Ambulance, 43rd Div - Normandy, Market Garden & crossing the Rhine. or 129 Fd. Amb. | The National Archives Reference: WO 222/545 Description: 129 Fd. Amb. Date: 1944 June - 1945 Mar. Held by: The National Archives, Kew Legal status: Public Record(s) TD
Thanks TD that is very helpful. Looking at the war diary, do you think a solider would be at a field ambulance unit for 4 months? Seems a bit long to me for him to not either be moved to a hospital or back to his unit?
Possibly. But his records indicate that on 7th April 1945 he was discharged from 5th Dorsets and posted to 52 RHU
If you have his service records do they show that he was struck off the strength of his unit (SOS) and posted to the x list. This would indicate whether he was hospitalised or not.
It says 5 Dorset Active? 129 Fld Amb to X(ii) list. At least that is what I think it says? The writing is hard to de-cypher.
