4/7th RDG in Palestine

Discussion in 'RAC & RTR' started by Paul Michael Smith, Apr 15, 2019.

  1. Not sure if this is the right section, so apologies in advance if that is the case. My father Tpr Thomas Leonard Smith left India in late 1945 or early 1946 after serving with the 25th Dragoons as a Sherman driver. He ended up in Palestine with 4/7th RDG and that is all I know. Before I go down the official route can anyone throw some light on where he might have been stationed. As far as I know he left in late 1947.

There is a very good website called 'British Forces in Palestine' ; it is very informative as I have used it for researching National Servicemen who served there.

  3. Many thanks Roger. I will have a good look this evening.

  4. Roger, I found this a very interesting website indeed and it certainly opened my eyes to what was going on. However, the link for 4th/7th RDG doesn't seem to be working. I will go through the official channels but I understand this can take quite some time. If anyone on here has access to any information such as Squadron nominal rolls for that period, I would appreciate it if they could check my father's service number, 14985235 to see where he was serving. Many thanks, in advance.

Searching just for the service number shows zero results from that database on Ancestry

  6. Thanks for checking TD. His number is what appears on his Palestine (4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards) and India (25th Dragoon Guards) medals.

His service records are really the best way to go in researching his military service - if you dont have them then the link is Request records of deceased service personnel if you do have them can I suggest you upload them for members oto help you in deciphering them

As my father is still alive (he'll be 94 on VE day), I have gone for the other option on the Gov.UK website. All I need now is some proof of identity from him and a signature. I too have to do the same and provide my personal details as I am acting on his behalf. Hopefully they can get the details back to me relatively quickly. Thanks again for the assistance.
