I have been asked by a work colleague who has a photo with just "39th Field Bakery" on the reverse. Apparently they landed on D-Day + 1. Can anyone help me out with anymore info such as AoS, vehicles used, UK base or the fate of the unit? Any help is much appreciated. cheers Kevin
Kevin, The War Establishments for Field Bakeries are in the Trux section. Look in RASC/Non Transport Units. Somewhere I have details/photos/drawings of he equipment and a plan of the unit lay out. All the vehicle were once in the Trux catalogue but have not been available for ten years or more now. There were no Field Bakeries in Normandy until July. Mike
Hi Mike, Thanks for that. I had already searched your RASC section to find the Establishment. As I had said in the first post I was asking for a work colleague who has a photo of her father with other RASC troops which just has 39th Barkery RASC on the back. From what little I know is that they were at some point based around the Manchester area. I am just trying to add some meat to the bones such as parent regiment etc. As you say the bakery units did not land until July but I am led to believe that he landed on D-Day + 1, is it possible that he could have been landing supplies? cheers Kevin
Kevin, As far as I can see 39 Field Bakery did not go to France and are not listed on the 21 Army Group Order of Battle. Of course there are many possibilities. A different D Day. Italy perhaps. Not very likely a bakery would land on D+!. Some personnel may have been transferred to another unit which did land on D+1. Drivers, mechanics, storemen, clerks and issuers could move from unit to unit. Storemen, clerks and issuers could work in several non transport units, Detail Issue Depots for example. Drivers and mechanics could be used in any RASC unit. Not much help I am afraid. Mike
Thanks Mike. That just leaves more questions than answers. If it were possible to pin them to a parent regiment / division would help. No one heard of 39th Bakery? Anyone? cheers Kevin
One possible diary at Kew to get started with wo166/4863 01 July - 31 December 41 Might link it to a higher formation and with luck, be able to follow things from there. Good luck
Not much in the RASC History. It just mentions amongst other units listed that there were 13 Field Bakeries in Normandy by late August.
I believe that the service records are going to be applied for shortly, which should hopefully give a lot more information. However they do not have a copy of the death certificate. Will this cause a problem with the records office or is there a way around this? And Drew, Hutt Thanks for the replies guys. cheers Kevin
