39ers?Who Were They???

  1. Some years hence I purchased along with a number of WW2 Lapel Badges the Badge of the "39ers",A Small {3/4"} Gilt & Enamel Badge with a K/Crowned Wreath & a Boomerang with 1939 And "Thirty~Niners"on a Riband @ the base,Presumably some sort of Australian Old Comrades Association,but can anyone help with more details?Thank You Roger, o_O

    The 39 er's were those men who enlisted in the 2nd AIF in 1939, usually the 6th Division 2nd AIF, which was the first division raised in 1939. Due to reorganisation of the Australian Division (4 to 3 brigades) some battalions were transfered to other brigades and number of the original battalions went straight to England (18th Brigade) instead of the middle east and later to form part of the 7th Division 2nd AIF .

    Good book on the subject called 'The Thirty Niners' by Peter Charlton

    Excellent I had thought it was something in that vein but wanted some confirmation,which you have graciously supplied,Many thanks regards Roger.I'll have to keep an eye out for the Book .
