Hoping someone may have some more information to help me research my grandfather John Slater 2nd battalion south wales borderers service number 3909248 KIA 13th june 1944. Originaly i was of the belief he died in a mortar attack but now understand he wasnt the casualty of that attack but a rmo Captain hearne who died and the padre injured. I can find no information of other 2nd Batt casualtys on the 13th june maybe someone else has more info on casualties on that day.

    Des,

His service number has not appeared here before.

We always recommend applying for his service record, it is the definitive record and is not online. Yes, it can take over a year to appear. Not helped by their transfer from the MoD to The National Archives (TNA). Details on message next.

For a short history see: South Wales Borderers - Wikipedia

It is possible he was a 'regular' soldier pre-war. Others here can tell from his number 3909248. Or volunteered before WW2 started, perhaps via being in the Territorial Army.

If you search online with: "2nd battalion south wales borderers" site:ww2talk.com this returns a small number of threads, at a glance some are similar to your research. Many more are found using: "2nd" + "south wales borderers" site:ww2talk.com

The CWGC data records the date of death, not the date of their original injury or cause.

It is possible the unit's war diaries (WD) may refer to that day or around then. These are generally held by the TNA. Some do appear here and on such sites as Ancestry.

This thread in Post 6 refers to a regimental history of the 2nd and a member has it so can check for specific dates or periods. See: 2nd Battalion monmouthshire regiment

An online search: "2nd" + "south wales borderers" + "war diaries" site:ww2talk.com found many threads to WD. You can narrow it down to Normandy.

    Good luck.

According to the regimental history, two other ORs were killed on the 13th. The battalion was in a position at Buceels that was overlooked and subjected to significant mortar and shell fire. There were quite a few wounded but they aren't quantified.
