Thus far, I am finding this to be a rather well-made programme: Iplayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01pf7dx
Hi VP, I threw this up as a possible interesting watch and then forgot it was on!! http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/52284-37-days-the-political-build-up-to-ww1/ I'll watch it on Iplayer so thanks for the link. Steve
If your world is so literal that everything must be shown on the exact anniversary of the subject covered, do you not get terribly confused with pre-Gregorian events?
No cos I'm not making a huge fuss over the 100th anniversary. The media is so it'd be nice if they were somehow related to what happened when.
I've Sky + this and not watched it yet but it does look good. Anyone watch the Max Hastings programme a few weeks back, that was good and the follow up against going to war was pretty dull and I found it a bit annoying how he kept slipping in facts about Scotland, like how they had more casualties than England etc.
That would be Niall Ferguson presumably? I think he quotes 26% death rate for the Scots, He got his calculations wrong. Long explanation here: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=180471&p=1752664
That's sounds right Geoff.....I think even the historians wished they hadn't bothered taking part in the debate. After he had said his piece on WW1 he didn't seem to be bothered by what anyone else had to say.
I must have bought this DVD earlier this year, but only just got around to watching it. I thought it was excellent. If it is factually correct then WW1 happened because of a handful of powerful madmen, supported by a bucket load of stupid people. Just as in WW2, it looks like a group of appeasers prevented decisive action being taken early, which may have averted war...but then hindsight does have magical properties.
