I am trying to find out about a Flight Sergeant WE Haggerty, 349956, who was mentioned-in-despatches in the Birthday Honours list of 1944.

Would anyone be able to shed any light?

I do know he became a Warrant Officer, but no idea of squadrons served with, etc.

    Any help appreciated!

Looking on Findmypast, probable match would be William Ernest Haggerty, b.1920, Essex, but cannot be sure if it is the same man.

His name and number have not appeared here before. Nor on TNA via a Discovery search with same details separately..

Pember Unfortunately, his Air 78 record card at TNA only gives his initials....they usually give full names and, sometimes, DoBs.

His service number possibly indicates he joined the RAF between 1919 and 1925. So, if true, I think you may have the wrong man.

    Best.
    John.

Thank you John for checking, I appreciate it.

The name and number in The London Gazette entry for birthday honours in June 1944 are a match (see attached, in second column lower down). It would seem that he was a long-serving RAF man.

It is indeed a pity that the information on the card is not more detailed.

Looking at Air Force Lists, "Haggerty, WE" was promoted to Warrant Officer w.e.f. 1st May 1944.
