I have the regimental war diary for 1939 to 1940 in France if you need anything else looking up.

    Cheers

hi Andy , thanks for that , I didn't know war diaries existed. Unfortunately I was looking for information just earlier than that, September to be exact.
I believe they may have been posted somewhere around Chateaubriand which would place them well away from the BEF in the North.
Where would I find a copy of the war diary for the preceding months?

    Thanks TH

Oh I just seen the address of the mansion in the drawing and that's not too far away from where i thought there were. Why would they be so far south in 1939?

The pages above are the only battery ones for the France Flanders Campaign. I'll look in the Regimental diary for you covering Sept 39.

Are you aware of 'In the Face of the Enemy, a Battery Sergeant Major in Action' by Ernest Powdrill MC? He was with the Regiment through WW2 and wrote a book about them.

    Sheldrake All over the place....

Powdrill was only in 10 Field Regiment for 1939-40. He served in 13 HAC RHA in Normandy.

Once upon a time I was battery history officer for 129 Dragon Battery RA, whose antecedents were 51/54 Dragon battery. The battery history for WW2 ended on 1 Sep 1939 and so I filled in the gaps.

I met a retired officer who had won the MC with the battery in Burma. He was a subaltern in 1939-40. After Dunkirk the soldiers were sent on leave but all of the young officers were set homework - writing an essay about their experiences on the campaign and what they thought were the lessons learned - "what I did on my summer hols" He gave me a copy which went into the battery history. 129 Battery are still around as a tac group in 4th Field, but whether the battery history and the 1940 sublaterns essay has survived various arms plots is a different matter.

These are unlikely to have found their way into the National Archives, but they might into the battery archives. 30 bty and 46 bty have been in suspended animation for many decades. There might be something in firepower.
