    Wayne,

I have checked out the Tpr Farmer thing and he was in the second tank 'Allenby' as 75mm gunner but he managed to escape the carnage... his is one of the reports on the official papers, but nothing else on him...
L/Cpl S Loughman (3444049) 'Allenby' hull gunner, also a witness, got out at this stage but it would appear he was unfortunatly wounded and listed missing on the 8th August. He was presumed taken POW as no remains were found inside the tank.

    Cheers

This photo shows my Grandfather (Sgt JGW Clough) with his crew next to a Stuart in North Africa, some time in early 42 I would guess, as they were to be issued with M3 Grants shortly after this (am I right here???). He is the one on the right of this picture, the man with the side arm... my question is does anyone who had family in the 8H recognise the other members of the crew? My cousin believes that crews were kept together:confused: so maybe they are the guys in Normandy I have listed in the previous posts. I would really like to hear from anyone who has the same/similar pictures in there collection, and know the people along side him.
Also, were they always kept, as I am led to believe in the same Squadron ie 'A' Squadron, or were they shipped around all over??

British Pathe film 1330.07 General Grant Tanks 1942 has a small clip of T24256 ALLENBY. But I thought it was knocked out on 27th May 1942.

Sorry Kevin but this 'Allenby' is a Cromwell tank T 187625 from 8th Hussars knocked out on 12th June 44 but thanks for replying.
I will checkout the film as it may well be an 'A' squadron tank in Africa

Cheers Kevin, you bet it is of interest!!! My cousin and I are now totally hell bent on finding out as much info on our Grandfather and the 8H as we can.
This is a welcome addition as we be able to trace tanks and squadrons, it will help put more pieces in the jigsaw I'm sure.. and pose a lot more questions if my cousin has anything to do with it...ha ha.. most of the things I ask on here started in his head,, I just do the donkey work....

No problem. Glad to be of help.

I updated the spreadsheet this morning from from last nights post with everything I had regarding 8KRIH.
I probably have more Grants and Cromwell's have so far I have not been able to match off to any specific regiment / unit.
I have a Grant ALLY SLOPER T24259, AoS 40, that I haven't been able to match yet. This could be another 8KRIH tank.
Any additional information or details that you can add will be most welcome.

    Cheers

Thanks for the email Dereck. After a prolonged absence I am now resubscribed to the list and eager to contribute to the research discussed in this thread - I have an extensive collection of photographs loaned to me by Tpr Cliff Dowding (Recce Troop under Bill Bellamy) which I will scan and add to my web site.
I am researching the circumstances of my uncle Tpr GW Attwood's death on or around 13th June - also a member of A Sqdn.

    Thanks Chris,

I have spoke with my cousin about these photos that you have, and he is very excited that there may be some of the crews before Bill Bellamy took charge they will be very easy to spot as Talbot-Harvey in his glasses will stand out quite well!!!;). I also asked him if he thought any of our family would mind if the pictures and info for JGW was on the site and he said they would be proud to see them there. Let me know when you want it and I'll zip it over to you.
The following text comes from page 9 of a booklet I found on the web, some details are incorrect (Rampf wasn't KIA) for one.. but it may also give you food for thought about your uncle George's fate..

    Thanks again Chris

On the other side, the British had been making slow progress. On the afternoon of June 12, the "Desert Rats" had bypassed Tilly and swung westwards before moving along on a southeast arc. The advance was largely uneventful until the 22nd Brigade’s Cromwells encountered and knocked out a German Mark IV at a hamlet called Jerusalem. The recce tanks of 11th and 8th Hussars had been relentlessly probing the German lines for a weakness. The Third Troop of A Squadron of the 8th Hussars eventually found it, but lost two Cromwell’s in the process, including the troop leader, Lt. Talbot-Harvey, who was posted as missing.
Then at 8 p.m., during the approach to Livry, a German anti-tank guns knocked out a Cromwell from the Kings Royal Irish Hussars (KRIH), killing two of the crew, including Lieutenant Rampf. A Stuart light tank from same unit was also knocked out by a panzerfaust. Further advances by the Hussars were repelled with additional losses in tanks. The delay was temporary, however, and the division smashed up the road with the full strength of the 22nd Armoured Brigade. Livry fell, and with darkness closing, the British set up camp for the night.
The bright red hue of fires from Caumont in the west, ablaze with American shelling, illuminated the night. But on the other side, to the east was the strange ethereal darkness that was the German lines. The "Rats" too observed this darkness. From their forward positions, a mere six miles separated Villers-Bocage and an engagement with history.

    Thanks again

    Hello all

Chris I saw from another post you looking for info on my father, I have a short history which is probally better on this thread.

    Amos John Burrows or "Jack"
First served as sergent with 4th RTR in the BEF 1940, took part the battle of Arras as tank commander, wounded by straffing of a paddle steamer on evacuation from Dunkirk, ( I remember the three bullet scars on his back, is there a list of wounded for Dunkirk?)
Rejoined 4th RTR in N Africa 1942/3 (not sure) while in Cario on leave?, 4RTR was "put in the bag" at Tobruk.
Reassigned to 8th kings royal Irish hussars as RSM ( i think ), who had also been in action and lost many men either captured or killed.
Took part in many actions with 8krih, in N Afica, siddi, El Alamien etc.
I think the regt went then to Crete, and or Italy?
They were back in England in 43/44, and took part in Normandy, right through to hamburg ( actually liberating some from his old regt 4RTR and the old RSM from 8krih. He took part in victory parade in Berlin (which is where that photo you have on your site was taken, Chris). There was something also about "nearly" an International incident involving a scout car, several tipsy NCO's and the Russian sector of Berlin, but I do not have the full story.
I know he got mentioned in dispatches, but when or what for not?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Your man is listed as being a 1st Line Reinforcement for C Company, 4 RTR during Sept 1939 with the rank of Acting Sergeant. I can also tell you the battalion embarked from Dunkirk on 27th May and at 0915 hrs the ship was attacked for 15 minutes by six German Fighters and the Bn suffered around 60 casualties. The Bn disembarked at 1500 hrs at Dover. Annoyingly I don't know the name of the ship but I suspect she would be a destroyer as Dover was used for Destroyers only with the very rare exception.

    Cheers

Hello. I recognise this is now an elderly thread but I am interested in the third tank in the 3 Troop action which claimed the lives of Lt Talbot-Hervey and Sgt Clough. Does anyone have any information which they would be willing to share?
    Thanks.

I realise this is a post from 9 years ago but I have just stumbled on it and joined the forum. I am researching the history of my Grandpa and Great Uncle both Lts in the 8th KRIH in 1944/45.
Their names were Robin and Richard Hardie Anstey. They both make appearances in Bill Bellamys book and I have traced a photo of Richard in Bognor prior to D Day. Richard was KIA in 1945 on the Dutch German border and I have a detailed account of that action but would love to find out more if anyone has any info.
