Am trying to find out any information regarding my late father's military history during WW2. He was a Signalman in the Royal Signals. I still have his Paybook, Soldier’s Service Book, Soldier’s Release Book and Medals and beret badge. I keep meaning to get the medals restored and mounted. One day perhaps. The books are fascinating reading, although not a complete record. He enlisted at Salford on 09/08/1940 and his trade on enlistment was Compositor. Army No 2349424. He was Demobbed in Aldershott on 03/04/1946. I know he served first in Africa then on to Italy. I have a Movement Order for him to go to Naples on 29 Sep 1945 to undertake a Compositor Refresher Course. At that time he was in No 3 Coy, 16 L of C Signals. I am also told he was in Rome during the Battle for Rome and the Battle of Monte CassinoAm trying to find out just what L of C is, but suspect it may be a Line of Communication? Also, I know when he was in N Africa he was at some stage in Tunis and I think Tripoli, and he had something to do with German prisoners as he gave me an Afrika Corps ring given to him by a German POW as a gift for giving him extra biscuits and water!! Ahh, we Edgars are Good Guys !! Another piece of memorabilia is a membership card and letter from the US Fifth Army Assoc dated 10/06/1944. Membership was given to any Brit who had been a “part of Headquarters Fifth Army any time during the present conflict”. I figure he must have been part of a Royal Signals Detachment with the US 5th. He also had a couple of non-fiction war books, one of which was titled "With the 8th in Italy" which I assume referred to the British 8th Army. For info, his pay was 2/6 per day, with 3d increase on 5/5/41, 9/8/41, 10/01/42, 21/1/42 and 28/3/42. That’s BIG DOLLARS for risking life and limb for your country, eh? I would be grateful to receive any help, assistance or info with this, and look forward to delving deep into this subject. Kind Regards to All
