Have recently joined this Forum and am having a hard time with research as I don't yet know my way around. By comparison, with the help of the Great War Forum, and Ancestry etc. finding out about dead guys is relatively easy as many more of their records are available.

Impressed with the stuff I have been able to dig up on the WW1 relatives, Eric has now asked me to see what I can find out about him! Since he is still alive and his records are presumably only available to family, I am not sure where to start. Are war diaries digitised as yet? If I get his unit number I guess that would help.

He ended up as a Civil Engineer and his army numbers were #14778277 when he joined as a private in April 1944, and #334012 when he became a 2nd Lt. in October 1944.

It seems he served as a Lt in 516 Command Secunderabad, at Cocanada Workshop as a Captain and at Jubbopore Headquarters of Mech. Engineers. He also served with General Wade in Madras.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Perhaps there may be people still around who served with him?

    Thanks,
    Hazel C

Yes, the Canadian WW1 War Diaries have been digitized. BTW: I have been waiting for years for the WW2 ones.
Go to: www.collectionscanada.ca It is on there somewhere I think. If you have trouble then I will go on and find it for you. I am about to go out so I can't look right now. However, I did take a quick look in the RCE official history Vol. 1 and I only see a Lt-Col W.L. Malcolm, not the same guy.
    What unit was he with?

Afraid he is British (still living in Cromarty) so I think he should just apply for his records for the bones, and between us maybe he and I can come up with the rest. He has actually written a few books about various historical subjects relating to Cromarty. I did ask when I phoned him today about his unit but what he said was basically what I added to my original post which is not a lot of helpI think. I think he maybe thought that Icould access information in the way I was able to for WW1. He had a bunch of relatives serving in both wars and the W.L Malcolm could very well be a relative.

    Thankyou so much,

    Hazel C

Hazel, the WW2 war diaries are not digitised as yet. If you get the exact unit information with dates from Eric then you can consult the war diaries either by visiting Kew or getting them copied. If he's struggling to remember then best for him to apply for his service records directly - it will be free and faster if he does it himself.

(I offer a cheap copy service and can provide digital images of war diaries for 9p a page).

    All the best,

    Lee
