I live in Shropshire about 10 miles from what was USAAF Atcham which I believe was part of 495 Fighter Training Group during WW2, there was during the course of its operational life about 50 deaths due to a variety of training acicidents.

One of them was 2nd Lt. Clifford Jenson who was killed in an accident in Lawley, part of what is now Telford.

He is considered a hero by many local people because with his striken aircraft on fire he elected to stay with his aircraft rather than bail out, because had he done so his P47-C (AF No. 41-6381) would have crashed into a local school killing countless children.

Today a memorial plaque in his honour was unveiled on the spot where his aircraft came down, the money was raised by local people who have never forgotten this young pilot, a handful of who witnessed the crash as youngsters were there at the unveiling.

(any additional information on Clifford Jenson would be gratefully recieved by the local people of Lawley)
