Hi Guys, Looking into the Glosters 2nd battalion,i've read somewhere that they wore a black material background to the capbadge(not back badge)unfortunately i cannot find anything about the whys & wherefores of this tradition,& cannot find the site i read the info from in the first place! Does anybody have any idea's??? Cheers , Al
Al The only reference I can find (from Badge Backings and Special Embellishments of the British Army) is that between 1851 and 1881 the 28th/61st Foot wore a black facing colour (leather or cloth) behind their star shaped shako plate. I would suggest that you make an enquiry at the Gloucester REgiment Museum (Soldiers of Gloucestershire military museum, online shop and genealogy search). I am certain that they will be able to give you chapter and verse on the background to this tradition. John

Although it is a little difficult to tell but there is a black backing to the cap badge. Sources:- The British Soldier pt 1 Military Customs Regiments and Corps of the British Army Cheers Kevin
cheers guys, yes, thanks Kev i can certainly see the black backing in the pic.thanks John,i'm going to give the museum a ring later & see what reasons they can come up with,as a re-enactment group portraying 2nd Glosters it would be nice to have an answer to "whats the reason for the black stuff behind the badge?" without having to resort to pretend fainting....
