I hope you end going on that trip.. Vietri is a lovely place, as is the whole area.. hard to imagine what was going on 75 years ago. Guess you'll fly into Naples then train to Salerno. The service is quite regular so shouldn't be a problem. I would love to return and was hoping to do the 75th annie but might have work commitments..

I only want to go direct so it looks like Newcastle to Rome then train to Vietri. That way, I get to go and see a couple of things in the centre of Rome, either on the way there or the way back - 2 nights in Vietri and Sunday night in Rome.

I've been having a look at the maps in Operation Avalanche and I see that the Pimple is at the 'other end' to where I was going to stay so i might have to reconsider the B&B. Not far as the crow flies but I'll be walking/getting a bus around the place.

yeah Piegolelle (neaar the pimple) is quite a way from Vietri but I think there are 2 buses needed to get to Piegolelle from Vietri. I think you can get a bus at Vietri piazza then change and onto Piegolelle which takes about an hour.. Its a proper yomp on foot and in that heat and gradient not that much fun.. Personally, i'd stick in Vietri because its central and commute out to the places of interest.. also , unless you are guided up the pimple by locals its a bit difficult to get to as it's off the main road and access isn't obvious although the town of Piegolelle is ok to roam around..

Click on this link to the Commando Veterans Archive website for a view of the Commando ROH for Salerno. You can change the items per page to ALL to avoid paging

There's some good information about where some of the 2 Commando casualties were initially buried on these pages of a document within the Commando Veterans Archive gallery
