Hi all Wonder if anyone could help me please. A friend's soldier grandfather died in 1945 and we are trying to work out where his regiment was in 1943 and 1944. Does anyone know where I could find out the regiment's movements? Many thanks Emma
At the start of Jan 45 the 2nd Monmouth was fighting under 53rd Welsh Division in the Ardennes near the Belgian village of Hotton, on the River Ourthe.
Hi If your friend hasn't already applied, they should get copy service records which will verify any / all units with which he was serving prior to his death: Request records of deceased service personnel War diaries for 1944 & 1945 are held at National Archives, Kew: WO 171/1348 2 Monmouthshire Regiment 1944 Jan.- Dec. WO 171/5245 2 Monmouthshire Regiment 1945 Jan.-Dec.
There also is a book (Regimental History) compiled by Captain G.A. Brett, which gives a detailed history. See: Ups - wrong link, sorry, you need the volume dealing with 1933 - 1952 This one: History of the South Wales Borderers and the Monmouthshire Regiment 1937-1952 Part III the 2nd Battalion the Monmouthshire Regiment 1933 - 1952 by A, Brett G: Hughes And Son Hardcover - Nugget Box (PBFA)
I have a copy of the 2nd Monmouth's regimental history mentioned above, but the time period of 1943 to 1944 spans 70 pages. Can you be any more specific regarding the dates you require?
That's very kind of you, thank you. I believe she's interested specifically in feb-apr 1944. Hopefully that's not too many pages?
OK, I will scan those pages and post them if there are not too many. Otherwise, I will start a conversation with you and send you a link to download the pages.
Hi - I'm looking for an intel report from the 2nd Btln Monmouthshires as quoted in the History of the 12th SS HJ. The date of the action was August 19 1944 - it was cited as 'Normandy-battle of the Falaise Gap. Can I ask if anything in the book you have quotes action from that date? If if there is a reference where I can find the original Intel report? Thanks C.
Here is the entry from the regimental history for August 19, 1944. Regarding a possible intel report, you need to find the war diary for the 2nd Battalion for August 1944. There are member here that may have these diaries and may respond to this message. The following member may be able to obtain these for you from Kew at a reasonable price: http://ww2talk.com/index.php?members/drew5233.6786/
Hi dryan67 I am wondering if you still have the regiment's history book and whether you might be able to share the pages from 27 March to 29/30 - regarding Dingden and Bocholt?
Early december the 2nd Bn Monmouthshire Regiment was in Kessel and envirement. Southern part of the Netherlands, beween the cities Venlo and Roermond, but at the westside of the river Meuse (Maas).
