I have attached a picture which my father saw in the paper in 1967 which shows the 2/11 Battalion AIF, he recognised himself in the photo (he is in the front rank on the left). The caption says that they are arriving in Egypt but may have been taken at the station before boarding the troopship at Fremantle Western Australia to sail to the Middle East in 1940.

If anyone knows of the original please let me know.

    Cheers

I know I have seen that Photo. Ill have to go through all the volumes of the Australian History of the Second World War.

There is a similar one around I have in a couple of books of the guys at Showgrounds Station Melbourne about to embark. Ill let you know either way.

Just looking through the AWM site and found over 400 references to 2/11 Batt

I have checked with the AWM and no luck, the photo was in the Daily Mirror originaly so will give them a go as well (35 years ago though)

By the look of the photo it looks like the blokes prepering to board the troopship in Fremantle (they were camped at Claremont Show Grounds), I have checked the photos via the AWM and same dress and kit standards. By the reports from the 2/11 war diary and images/film of them arriving in ME not as well turned out.

    Cheers

Hi Spider, i am new to the forum and came across your post in google. My Grandfather, Augustus Bendall was a member of the 2/11 and died in a air raid in Crete 28th may 1941. I only have his paybook photo and have not managed to find any others, not 1 family member remembers him at all and i am desperately trying to fill my Grandfathers history. I cannot see the photo from the paper you have mentioned, is there another link where i can view it.
    Cheers

Hi Narelle - don't forget to go to the ww2roll site (World War Two Nominal Roll) to print out a neat looking certificate. This can be done for all personnel, not just those that didn’t survive.

Following on from the info provided by Robert, when you click on the AWM ROH link besides seeing his paybook photo there is a circular attached. This refers to where he was killed with a bit more detail - ie Paravalo, Crete (since you already knew that he died in an air-raid maybe you already knew where, but added just for info).

    cheers & good luck

Wes Olson has written a unit book on the 2/11th that may provide some answers for you.
