8 Field Regt was re-organised as a Jungle Field Regiment in March 1943 in India as part of 25 Indian Division. It moved to Burma (Arakan) in March 1944.

I was at a loose end Jessica and one of my other hobbies is colourising photos. No idea of what the colours should have been and I have done the tie in Royal Artillery colours. Hope it's ok. Paul

Hi all, this is fascinating stuff to read. My grandad, Leslie Devlin, was also in the 28th field regiment, 3rd battery I believe. After all these years he only recently started to talk to me about his time in the war, the rest of my family had never known him to speak of anything much. Unfortunately he passed away last month at the grand age of 98, and I am typing up notes of everything he told me, so that I can pass the story to the rest of my family. Any information anybody has would be amazing, I would love to beef out the notes I have if anybody is willing to point me in the right direction. I have a few photos of him with a couple of other guys, will try to upload them

    Hi Jessicah.

A tad late I know, but as Skoyen89 advised, with regard to your grandad’s medal entitlement it’s very easy to contact the MOD Medal Office in Gloucester. This is the form:

    Ministry of Defence medal form

If you are only interested in finding out his entitlement, simply put “Entitlement Only” in the box by “I wish to apply for”.

    More info here:

    Medals: campaigns, descriptions and eligibility

I recently applied for three of my relatives’ WW2 entitlements and had the records back within a week! Most impressive.

If you want to obtain genuine original medals, perhaps for a framed display in honour of your Grandfather, may I suggest going on to the British Medals Forum (BMF):

British Medals Forum • Index page

They have both “Medals For Sale” and “Medals Wanted” sections and you can be certain that the medals offered to you will be genuine and fairly priced.

The same applies for RA badges and patches etc on another excellent site, “The British Badge Forum”.

    The British Military Badge Forum

As with the BMF, it has a “Sales and Wanted” section, friendly and helpful experts, good advice and tips, which is how I got hold of a great collection of genuine RA items, even my grandad’s Divisional shoulder patch, at good prices.

If I ever saw anything offered, for example, on Ebay that the members of either site could not provide themselves, I could ask them whether the item was genuine or not, too expensive or not, and always found them very helpful.

Best of luck to you with your research.
