Hello Jessicah and I have attached a few pictures of the 28th Jungle Field Regt and the lads who were in it. My Dad was a gunner signaller with them in 1945. I'll try and dig out what actions they were in. I never heard Dad speak of any of the regiment being taken as POW. It was thought that it was just the 28th Field Regiment but when I took my Dad to Kew many years ago, we found the government directive making it a Jungle Field Regiment. I'll see what I can find in my old records. In May 1945, my Dad caught malaria badly and left the regiment but I will try to find out their movements. The 28th Jungle Field later became part of 19th Indian Div. I've no longer got the program that I created the Burma Star website with so have had to take screenshots. I hope they are of some help. The new Burma Star Association website is also a good source of information. 5th Ind 1.jpg

The ONLY way to get your granddad’s service record is by applying to the MoD, currently a very long wait though. In the meantime it would be helpful to read some of the many books about the Campaign.

In years gone by, I was given permission to transcribe a large section of an out of date book called Ball of Fire by Antony Brett-James which was published in 1951. This section covers the period November 1943 to the mopping up in 1946. I can't upload it here as it is 40Mb but you should be able to access it HERE I will try and get some maps to go with it when I can fathom out how to. The pdf will take a few minutes to download.

Hello again Jessicah, I've attached images from the time although the RA one is the up to date version. I think the only metal badge that they wore was the RA one and the others were cloth and would have been worn on the top of their sleeves - that is 'if' they wore them as if captured, you would have given your unit away. As regards badges, yes, they do come up on ebay. I have been making some regimental walking sticks recently and bought metal badges from British Army - Blazer Badges, Bow Ties, Cap Badges, Cuff Links, Lapel Pins, Tie Bars, Ties, Wall Shields - Pressed Men - The Regimental Gift Company Page 1 14th.jpg 5inddiv.gif 19inddiv.jpg RA grad.png

I also did a Diary and you might find this useful. I am sorry they are images but this was the easiest way for me to do it, not being able to copy and paste into a text or html program. So update I have been pouring through old editions of the dekho paper of the Burma assosiation website I found my grandads obituary where it notes he was part of the 8th jungle regiment as opposed the the 28th jungle regiment thoughts was there an 8th jungle too or do we think it’s a typo ??? Also I’ve only got a couple of pics of grandad (unfortunately none of him as a young man) as he passed when I was only 12 but if anyone recognises him it may be a far reaching dream to find any old comrades or pics of him I know but worth a shot !

You can't get official replacements if they are lost. The best is to get his records from the MOD to see his entitlement. Then look at buying a set on EBay or at auction......but make sure they are originals. Most WWII medals were unnamed so there are nany on the market that are 'unattributed' to an individual.

More likely that his Burma Star application that he filled out will be right than Dekho listing.

    Hi Jessica
there is a good Facebook group called 'WW2 Burma Research' and there are one or two on it who have relatives who were in 28th (J) Field Regt. As has been said above, getting his records from the MOD will help pin down when he was there vand so which battles etc he was likely to have been involved in.
