1st Guards Brigade, 6th Armoured Division, 10 Corps
2736347 Lance-Corporal Glyn EVANS, 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS

    8th June 1944. Map Ref 878938, Sheet 144/III, 1/50,000, ITALY.

During the advance up Route 4, No. 4 Company had reached report line HARRY. A patrol of one Lance-Sergeant and three [blank - ?Other Ranks] was ordered forward over very open country to find out whether a house 500 yards down Route 4 at 878938 was occupied by the enemy.

The Patrol were pinned in a shallow gully 100 yards from the objective. One man was severely wounded. Lance-Corporal EVANS and a Guardsman [name deleted] took their stretcher forward over completely open ground under heavy small arms fire under cover of only L.M.G. fire from one section of the Company from their position.

By crawling forward with the stretcher they were able to get to him, tie him up and eventually slid him back out of danger. It was apparent from the attention paid to them by the enemy that they were trying their utmost to prevent the casualty being evacuated. [One further sentence has been deleted.]

Signed Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS

    Granted an Immediate M.M.
