2733239 W.O. Class III (P.S.M.) Sydney Joseph SLACK, 1st Battalion, WELSH GUARDS, attached Brigadier NORMAN's Force, G.H.Q. Troops, 48th Division

For personal courage, resource and initiative.
On 29th May, 1940, near VYFEG, SOUTH of BERGUES, the position held by P.S.M. SLACK's Platoon was heavily attacked by tanks and infantry.

One tank halted behind a hedge three yards away from P.S.M. SLACK. He immediately threw a grenade under the track. The turret of the tank was opened and a German appeared with a revolver.

P.S.M. SLACK immediately threw a second grenade which burst inside the turret and put the crew out of action.

Later he showed the greatest coolness and resource when his Platoon was ordered to withdraw in close contact with the enemy and it was largely owing to his resource and personal leadership that the operation was carried out successfully.

    Signed V. COPELAND-GRIFFITHS, Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 1st Bn WELSH GUARDS
