Could anyone help me find information on 2722075 R.Skelland? On pre embarkation list 1944 on a firefly tank but no Serial number. I know he was injured in a tank (all crew but him died - he was badly burned) and he married in 1945 so assume he was injured 1944 and medically withdrawn but I can't find anything. R Skelland 2nd row 3rd from left, Irish Guards March 1940
Thanks for attaching the image but have you got a better one as it is too small and blurred to make out any individual. Steve
Welcome aboard. We always advise obtaining their Service Record, it is the definitive record. Yes, it may take time to obtain, as it could be with the MoD still or with The National Archives. Some tips en route next.
Please note Lance Corporal R H Skelland, 2nd Battalion Irish Guards, No.2723075 was wounded on 4th March 1945 as recorded in Casualty List 1710, entry on page 15 (please see images below). No. 2722075 is the number of Guardsman T Hogan, 3rd Battalion Irish Guards. Kind regards, always, Jim.
Hi Jim, that's great thank you! I'm a newbie to the site so still finding my feet. I don't suppose you know what the numbers and initials are .801 and R.H are do you? This site is excellent for information, if you can understand it!
The "801" is the Press Release "Casualty List" number. There's a very interesting thread about casualty list numbering but I can't find it at the moment. Hopefully one of the fine folks on here will remember what the thread is called and post the link up. "R H" is for Robert Henry (Skelland), born 13th November 1922, Lancashire. Good luck with all your research, kind regards, always, Jim.
For the period covering when your grandad was wounded in March 1945 please see the thread by forum member "dbf" (who has painstakingly transcribed the 2nd Battalion Irish Guards war diaries for the period) here: War Diary: 2nd Battalion Irish Guards, Jan - Dec 1945 Although your grandad's wounding is recorded as taking place on 4th March 1945 (and not any date prior to this) I think you'll find dbf's transcriptions for 4th and particularly 5th March 1945 of interest. Kind regards, always, Jim.
