Are there any experts on the Forum regarding the 272 Squadron based in Malta during WW2. It is just that a colleague of ours has some photographs and is anxious to try and name the crew members featured and also perhaps the context? Contact me off list if you are one of them and feel that you are able to assist please. Many thanks Kelvin
The pictures can now be seen here: Photo's with questions If anyone can assist it would be appreciated. Kelvin
Kelvin, Some super photographs and I wish you well with identification. What books I have do not go into too much detail about malta and 272 squadron. I have some pages in a book devoted to the convoys and delivering Spitfires from USS Wasp and HMS Eagle. A veteran friend of mine was on board HMS Eagle during the deliveries and was on her when she was later torpedoed. He was injured but survived several hours in the water. Regards Tom
Hi Kelvin Well I'm far from being an expert about RAF but I think that man in the middle on the Picture G is Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Rodney Park. In that time he commanded air defence of Malta and was Air Vice-Marshal (see shoulder insignia). Keith Park - Google Search
Hi Kelvin Well I'm far from being an expert about RAF but I think that man in the middle on the Picture G is Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Rodney Park. In that time he commanded air defence of Malta and was Air Vice-Marshal (see shoulder insignia). Keith Park - Google Search I am not sure that it is Keith Park in the photograph, but it can only be Keith park or his predecessor Hugh Pughe Lloyd. Looking at the man to his right on the photograph, judging by the two rows of medals it could well be Group captain A B Woodhall (Woody) of Bof B fame. Regards Tom
I am not sure that it is Keith Park in the photograph, but it can only be Keith park or his predecessor Hugh Pughe Lloyd. Tom, I must say that to me he doesn't look like AVM Hugh Pughe Lloyd (on the picture) Also dates don't match. 272 Squadron was on Malta from 24th May 1941 to 28th May 1941 and then again between 6th November 1942 and 1st September 1943, while Lloyd was appointed Air Officer Commanding in Malta on 1st June 1941 and was replaced by Keith Park in June 1942. So never were Lloyd and 272 Squadron at the same time on the island. I still believe that man on the picture G is AVM Keith Park. Cheers Enes
Enes, I believe that you are right, in my haste to eat my evening meal I did not look for a photograph of the man to compare. regards Tom
Thanks chaps - I should have an update on some of these over night - Sol - I am sure you are right. Smudger - what are you doing in Berlin? I lived in Spandau for a couple of years - in the 70's. Guarded the "man" whilst I was there. Kelvin Very helpful Forum this and thanks chaps and chapesses.
Hi, this is my first post on this forum, but I have been lurking for a while. Kelvin, you could try e-mailing the pictures to the Malta Aviation Museum at Ta'Qali. This is run by volunteers but they are extremely knowledgeable. The address is: info (at) maltaaviationmuseum.com or toneri (at) mail.global.net.mt My father was stationed in Malta in 1940-1941. I have sent them some details and they are looking into his service there. They have thousands of photographs of servicemen who were in Malta, many of them identified, so they may be able to help you. I can't tell if my dad is in any of the large group photos, and I can't work out how to attach a picture so you could compare. I only have this one pic of him in uniform, so I'd love to find some more.
Thanks Owen, How about emailing me the picture if you want? I will also try and email that contact you sent and thanks very much for that. I have some updates for the pictures and will try and add them today sometime. Kelvin Pictures with questions
I've worked out how to do it now. Here's dad, RVD Smith, 89088 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=266&pictureid=2263 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=266&pictureid=2262
Thanks Smudger. All I know is that he was in Malta 1940-41. Mum said he flew photo reconnaissance. He himself never talked about any of it.
