During the whole period, his conduct as a Section leader was of the highest order, and on many occasions contributed to the success achieved by the Company as a whole. On the night of 5th February / 6th February, the enemy captured a house dominating the positions held by his Platoon, and began immediately to harass the Platoon by means of snipers and machine-guns. Moving from trench to trench at great personal risk, Lance-Corporal SHIRLEY personally directed and controlled the fire of his Section with such effect that after three hours the enemy in the house were themselves killed, or at least ceased from firing. During this period, when his Platoon was in a most difficult position, Lance-Corporal SHIRLEY, by his resourceful leadership and personal courage, showed an example which had an infectious effect on the men in the Platoon, and turned a dangerous situation to a favourable issue. He showed himself to be a Section leader of altogether outstanding merit. Signed E.J.B. NELSON, Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 5th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS Granted an Immediate M.M.
