Hello, I am hoping you can help. I am researching former members of my rugby club. The obituary for the above states he was a POW and I am trying to find out more about that.

I have his MC commendation from April 1945 where he was at TWENTE CANAL NORTH OF ENSCHEDE.

I suspect he was late joining up as other records suggest he was still as school master until the early 40s, so any dates anyone can offer would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Other than being wounded, as post #4 above, can find no record of being a POW, can you post his obituary and whatever other details you have, i.e. where did he come from, dates etc. anything may help.

If taken POW, it's possible that it was so late on in the war in NWE that he won't appear to be listed in any WO records...

A couple of my father's mates were both captured, also in April '45, one even appears with other identified individuals on a newsreel, just after being liberated a few weeks later. Definitely POWs. However, no results appear for any of those men in searches I've conducted.

I've attached the Liverpool Echo obit with the POW reference.

Born 13/3/1913 in Wakefield district, died 9/2/1983 in Cheshire.

Married March 1937 to Dorothy nee Davies.

Educated at Wakefield Grammar School and Downing College Cambridge.

Hope this helps and thank you for the responses so far.

    Hi

I found several newspapers suggesting that 9 Commando's padre in Greece got a MC.

I never found anything official. Amport house confirmed he didn't.

So just be careful trusting what you read a newspapers.

I only trust newspaper reports when I can back them up from elsewhere. You would think that the family supplied the information for the Obit and you would like to think they wouldn't get such an important fact wrong.

    Hello

I came across this while doing some research for my son’s school project on WW2.

    I am Lt Allen’s grandson!

I have his MC and letter from the King awarding it.

Please message me and I will give you the details.

I would also be interested to learn about his rugby career.
