Yes to go to the trouble of making them then getting it so badly wrong when it's just as easy to get it right.
    I think I'll pass

Just noticed these on ebay being sold as 24th lancers cufflinks anyone believe this is correct? Could be someone just had them made postwar maybe or are they xxiv south wales boarders perhaps?

They are 24th Regiment of Foot aka South Wales Borderers. The 'collar badge equivalent' often come up on eBay and, even though I've contacted the seller in the past to point out his error, it seems to make no difference. Classic case of Caveat Emptor.

Thanks Steve I had thought as much but wanted to check. I asked the seller and he really wasn't 100% sure. I told him if he wished that I could post the pics to find out more to which he seems quite grateful.

I've sent him an eBay message pointing out the error and he has acknowledged.

Rather nice looking but already sold, albeit they don't appear to list there on this page for what price: Buywyze

24th Lancers WW2 War Raised Officer's Field Service Side Cap.

A very fine rare example, tailored by Herbert Johnson of London. French grey and dark blue cloth, with gold bullion piping. Complete with original fine quality bullion and coloured silk embroidered cap badge and regimental buttons.

Raised December 1940. Fought in North West Europe.

And def. not something I have seen before. Albeit the XXIV bit seems to make the V look rather cramped: http://www.buywyze.com/viewphoto.php?x=1

I came across this on a search a little while ago. I was asking Marcus H about it we were wondering how much it would have sold for it must be pretty rare the bullion on its own is quite a find but with the addition of an original early side cap. I'd love this but doubt I'd ever see one in the flesh. Do you think the two buttons on the front are the same as the 19mm (or probably originally correct to say 3/4") pitt & Co or was there an even smaller example?

There was, I understand, an even smaller button but I've never seen one. Urban myth?

I think you maybe right Steve by doing some slightly inaccurate measurements from the picture on my phone to scale the cap with the buttons would make the cap roughly 8" in hight which seems way to big. So they buttons must be slightly smaller. 1/2" maybe?
Also just realised using the method of measuring/scaling from the photo and classing the buttons as 19mm it would make the length of the cap near 20"

Whoever got it or wherever it went - I wonder what other 24th L treasures they have... ;)

Hopefully they were not after 24th Regiment of Foot aka South Wales Borderers stuff... :D

    I see over at:Buywyze

    They also have (currently): http://www.buywyze.com/viewphoto.php?shoph=1021022&phqu=2

24th Lancers scarce WW2 pair of OSD bronze collar badges.
A fine die-cast pair on loops.
    Raised 30th December 1940.

Albeit I thought that the 24th L were actually raised 18th December 1940.

Taking the 18th December 1940 reference from the 24th L Wardiary and NHL and not from the wiki page: 24th Lancers - Wikipedia

Which says (at the moment for them):

    Active 30 December 1940 – 24 July 1944

Wikipedia: we all know that that is the most accurate source of information in the history of the universe....

I remember being told off by a Wiki knowall for adding some text to the 24L wiki page. Apparently first hand information (reported via me) from real veterans and stuff I know anyway from years of contact with said veterans doesn't count because I can't quote a proper reference/source. My accurate information was promptly changed back by the knowall to (his?) inaccurate information!

    WW2 ISSUED 24th Lancers Regiment Tunic Buttons - 26mm & 19mm

In ref. to the posts 3,4 & 5 above: The link above (currently) has:
    24th Lancers WW2 ISSUED 24th Lancers Regiment Tunic Buttons - 26mm & 19mm
"British army regimental and corps tunic buttons are as varied as all other aspects of regimental insignia. They come in 3 main sizes with c. 26mm "Large" size used for tunic buttons, great coats and officer's buttons. The c. 19mm "Medium" sized buttons used for No. 2 Khaki service dress tunic buttons, parade uniforms, pockets and epaulettes. The c. 14mm "Small" size buttons mainly used for caps, mess dress waistcoats and General's red insignia gorget tabs."

    And these:

Shame the cap we were discussing didn't have a close up of the ""Small" size buttons mainly used for caps" as well as the bullion - but such is life I guess! :blank:

Excellent Rm that clears that one up. I thought the same thing about a close up of the buttons.
I also wondered who's collecting these 24L items? And more importantly why are they not on here sharing their collections with us....... Its the same when I see a genuine badge on ebay being won I think maybe they are traders buying and selling or maybe they are genuine collectors or maybe others with a link to the 24L like ourselves but have never needed to do further research but may well have some good info to share? Who knows

All buttons are gilt coloured, albeit time and wear has diminished the finish slightly on a couple of examples.

Diameter: respective placing to images above.

    Large: 25.54mm 25.88mm

    Medium: 19.28mm 19.63mm

Again, displaying the lovely embroidered cap badge.

IMG_5255.JPG Two embroidered cap badges from my collection.

If any reader has an example of the embroidered 24L officers' cap badge, I would be most interested in viewing it.

    Best,
