    201st Guards Brigade, 56th Division, 10 Corps
233183 War Substantive Lieutenant George Richard STOKES-ROBERTS, 6th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

During the advance to BATTIPAGLIA on 10th September 1943 this Officer's Company was ordered to attack an enemy position.

He led his Platoon with outstanding dash and leadership and successfully captured his objective destroying an Anti-Tank gun and capturing Prisoners of War.

Three half-tracked armoured vehicles then appeared which he engaged with small arms fire and forced to retire. The position had not been finally reorganised when the enemy attacked with tanks.

Again this Officer showed complete disregard for his own personal safety moving about in the open organising the withdrawal of his Platoon which was accomplished in good order to a position already assigned to him. During the whole action he showed courage and leadership of the highest order and exceptional devotion to duty.

Signed W. KINGSMILL, Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 6th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

    Granted an Immediate M.C.
