Hi All, I am hoping somebody may be able to assist me. I am looking for any information, service number and in particular I would really like to find a picture of him or a group photo pre-Normandy. What I do know is that Douglas was a conscientious objecter, he jumped into Normandy (account attached). Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated thanks Bruce
Hi Bruce Welcome Your best place to start is to obtain a copy of his official service records, these are ONLY available from the MOD (for WW2) and the forms you need are here Request records of deceased service personnel you will also need a copy of his death certificate to include with the forms These will provide the base from which to work TD
Hi TD, thank you for your information. Unfortunately I do not have his death certificate or any details of this so think this will hamper me getting the details you suggested thanks Bruce
If you have his name (which you do) and a rough idea when he died and where then its not difficult to purchase a death certificate - they usually cost about £10 ish TD This might be him as the other 2 I can find where born in the 1930's Name: Douglas Maurice Protheroe Death Age: 67 Birth Date: 5 Jul 1919 Registration Date: Mar 1987 Registration District: Bangor Inferred County: Gwynedd Volume: 25 Page: 156
If that is him then - Order a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate TD 1939 England and Wales Register Name: Douglas M Protheroe Gender: Male Marital Status: Single Birth Date: 5 Jul 1919 Residence Year: 1939 Address: Millstream Glannant Rd Residence Place: Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales Occupation: Lecturer Poultry & Husbandt
I am still awaiting Mr Protheroe’s army records, which I have applied for. however I have found out his serial number 97001936. He attended Ringway on course 85 Sep/Oct 43. He was in A company. If anyone has any further information that would be greatly appreciated, particularly any images. I know there are a couple of group photo’s but have not seen any corresponding names or indication that it may be A company. thanks Bruce
Hi Bruce Covid if affecting the speed of service obviously, patience is the key - in the meantime have you checked out 225 Parachute Field Ambulance RAMC | ParaData - there are some photos etc that might include your relative 225th Parachute Field Ambulance, RAMC Do you know if he was involved in Varsity? 225th Parachute Field Ambulance, RAMC TD Other background - Wellcome Library | Surgical reports from 225 Parachute Field Ambulance for June and July 1944 Parachute Doctor: the Memoirs of Captain David Tibbs - AbeBooks Parachute Doctor: The Memoirs of Captain David Tibbs Tibbs RAMC MC, David Synopsis: Parachute Doctor is the story of Captain David Tibbs RAMC MC who as a member of 225 (Parachute) Field Ambulance and the 13th Parachute Battalion served with the 5th Parachute Brigade of the famous 6th Airborne Division. Thank you sir, I have looked through the Paradata website which has some good information and pictures but didn’t manage to see anything there. I have also just read the book parachute doctor, it is a good book and one I would certainly recommend. as for your question yes he also parachuted for operation Verasity. would any body know how the 225th were divided, ie was a company assigned to a particular battalion? So in this case A company should that have been assigned to say the 7th ? thanks Bruce
