    Hi.

I am wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction. I am trying to find out some more about my grandfather, John James McIver, who I never met. I believe he served in the 21st Independent Parachute Company because it says so on my mother's birth certificate from 1944.

I would be really grateful for any suggestions of where to look.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Suzy

    Welcome

The best and really only place to start research into your relative is to obtain their service record. You can only apply and receive these records from the MOD (nowhere else) and their link for them is - Requests for personal data and service records: a detailed guide: a detailed guide: these records will tell you when he joined, which units he was with and where he was sent. From these details its then possible to find the relevant War Diaires for those units and they will provide day to day details (hopefully) of what he did and where

PS might be worth starting a seperate thread for him - might be worth a look for background info 21st Independent Parachute Company | ParaData

There may be other threads on this forum for the unit, so suggest you try the search function

Hi folks, I'm new to using the forum, but may I first say thank you for setting it up and all the information and help you give to others researching their family military history. I am currently waiting for my grand fathers records, in the meantime I am hoping someone might be able to help me. From what we know my grand father was a para, he was in north africa, italy and arnham, he never talked much about the war, from what i have seen of documentaries of arnham i not surprised. All we do know from my mum, her sisters, brother and my gran is he was a red devil and when in arnham he was told to strip off his uniform and swim across the river when they where retreating. my grand dad would get a visitor every year from a buddy of his who fought with him and everyone in the house would have to leave the room, no one was allowed to hear the converstion. A year or two after my grand dad died (1975) my uncle met the same visitor, but remembers that the man told him that my grand dad was in the 21st parachute company. My grand dad was Denis L Kennedy (aka Don), but we know he enlisted as James Denis Kennedy, his older brothers name, as he was underage. If anyone can help me it would be great to verify this information. I have included two photos of him, one in uniform taken in africa, it was bigger and included others, they were all in shorts but my gran cut it up, the other photo is when he came out of service in a suit given to him by the military, you can just about see the pegasus on his lapel. looking forward to any info.
