    Hello all,

Has anyone got the date that 2 SG and 3 CG of the reformed 201 GB moved to Syria from Egypt in 1942, The the newly arrived 6GG followed on 3 Oct 1942.

I am researching the movements of a G/Gdsman who was captured 13 March 1943 whilst part of a standing patrol just prior to the Battle of the Horseshoe.

Are there any lists of Other Ranks casualties or info on the movement of POW's to Italy following the battle.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi,

201 Guards Brigade set off for Syria 15th September 1942. Details on page 151/152 in the below downloadable PDF Regimental History.

The Coldstream Guards, 1920-1946, by Michael Howard and John Sparrow

There are individual records of “casualties” within the CG regimental documents on Findmypast and “lists” on the official War Office casualty lists that are also on Findmypast.

Movements of POW from North Africa to Italy are not recorded by the Regiment. Italians would inform Swiss Red Cross of the arrival of POW at their first camp and Regimental records would be updated and NOK informed.

If you have an enquiry about a specific POW you need to apply to Swiss Red Cross 27th May for copies of the man’s POW records held by them. It’s a free service. You need to check the site at the given opening time when a drop down online application form will be visible. Complete and submit it speedily as the enquiry window can close within 90 minutes or so. You will get E Mail acknowledging receipt of your enquiry and a comprehensive reply by email within 2 to 3 months.

    Good Luck

    PS

My father served CG 1937/46. He was 3rd CG 1937/41 until he was taken POW at Antelat, Libya December 1941 during the Operation Crusader advance.

Thanks very much for the info Steve. I will follow the links with interest, My man was a Grenadier, an interesting character. He was on the run in Italy for 9 months after the Armistice and fought with the Partisans before reaching the American lines with the help of an anti fascist Italian officer.

There is a brief POW record on Ancestry. He was at Laterina Camp.
    Cheers
