I am drawing up long-range plans for my October 2009 school battlefields tour (yes, really, I plan them well in advance). I am coming to the end of a long Great War 90th anniversary sequence in 2008 and am looking for a World War II themed trip to follow it. I may do Arnhem again or else one I have had on the stocks for a while on the V Weapons. This would visit Eperlecques Bunker, La Coupole and Memoyeques. This won't cover the whole weekend and I am looking to flesh out the tour. Can anyone suggest any other relevant sites in the Pas De Calais area? Incidentally the tour would link in to the 65th anniversary of the V-1 attack on Northern England on Christmas Eve 1944. A number of the air-launched missiles landed in the Bury area, including one on Tottington a mile from my house.
Mark - what about looking at some of the 1944 fighting on the 'Long Left Flank'... the fighting at le Havre, Boulogne, Calais and Dunkirk. Some interesting material in Terry Copp's books and guidebooks, and some good stuff on the ground. The Canadians were assisted by many British units, including 79th Armoured, 49th West Riding and 51st Highland Divisions in these left flank operations. If you just kept it to Boulogne and Calais there is a lot to see, and it links in well with the V weapon sites.
This guidebook of Copp's will help you greatly: The Canadian Battlefields in Northwest Europe, 1944-1945: A Visitor's Guide
