I am guessing these are Second word war as that is what they appear to me. The sergeant I would think too old to be a regular, so I guess in the Home Guard? Most likely in Scotland, did they have Home guard there please? (Glasgow area associated with family) Younger chap looks like Australian uniform to me? Any suggestions/info please?
Not being an expert on uniforms,I doubt he is Australian, 1 would expect to see Rising Sun collar tabs or hat bdge which are absent on the photo. Typically, your "home on leave" type photo would also have displayed the ribbon for the Africa star. I is rather strange to just see a 1939-43 star ribbon up (if he was Australian Army). To my mind, he is more likely to have been BEF & pic taken before deployment to India /Burma or home on leave from NWF Regards Simon
The top one is a 1940 Pattern BD and GS cap - I suspect late 1944/1945 going by the low shoes. The bottom one is a British soldier wearing the earlier 1937 Pattern BD and 'slouch' hat. Again, I suspect late 1944/1945
The arm of service strip has been coloured yellow/red. That is for Royal Armoured Corps. wonder if it was hand coloured correctly by person who did the photo tinting ? for example. Blouse, Battledress,1940 pattern: Major, Royal Armoured Corps | Imperial War Museums
Thanks for the answers. Plenty of food for thought there. Perhaps you no longer need to know, but as no-one else responded, yes there were Home Guard in Scotland. My father-in-law (now almost 95) joined the LDV and subsequently the Home Guard in Aberdeenshire. Steve.
If he was Home Guard wouldnt he have a patch with his County Code on ? see here>> Structure of the Home Guard
Owen is right. The AoS strip points to him being a regular, too. I wouldn't put too much on it having been tinted the right colour, though - look at their cheeks!
