Found this reference in the 10th HLI war Diary for April 44 regarding 2 Spitfire crashes near Wiston.

Is there any easy way to identify what Squadron they were from or who the pilots were?

More on Roy Marples time with 238 Squadron Hurricanes in the Western Desert

Not sure about him being MP and Transport Minister though, wasn't that ERNEST Marples?
Lots more on a quick Google, loss of a BoB veteran, but in wartime accidents happen to the best of them.
