Hi everyone , My grandad was CPL David Bateman , 52nd Battalion , 6 th airborne division , ox and bucks light infantry . Also thought to of been in special service and did a raid in Dieppe with the 4 commandos . My grandad with the 6 airborne division was in glider 4 out of 6 to land first the night of dday . His glider was the glider that landed 8 miles off target . Once they landed they were met by the Germans which they fought of , by the next day escoville they were met by the Germans , my granddads best friend sgt Barwick was killed and another friend Raynor was shot by a dead german ( as he hi the deck ) . It was around this time my grandad was captured and taken POW at stalag 357 Poland and 2 and a bit months later was marched to fallingbostel 357 Germany . I never met my grandad and have been interested in his story prob since I was about 18 , 14 years later after only knowing that he was in the ox and bucks , I've discovered this story . I would like some gaps filled if anyone can help ? I'd liked to know if my grandad was captured with anyone else in his platoon and another information on my grandad during his time with the airborne and the commandos . My grandad war number was 5383417 . I'm looking forward to chatting with some of you .

Hi, I have just conducted a quick search of the records I have access to, and unfortunately I am unable to restrict my search to a specific period, other members here may be able to help further. You could also try contacting the following museums: Home - Soldiers of Oxfordshire Overview of The Royal Green Jackets Museum http://www.airborneassault-duxford.com/ Mark
Hi and welcome to the forum. If everything you have heard about your Grandfather is true (and I have no reason to doubt it) he had a very distinguished wartime service. Sometimes recollections can get blurred and the best way to establish the facts is to apply for his service record: service records army It might take a few months to get the record but it is far and away the best place to start. Good luck - you will find many members here willing to help with your research. Mike

And the list of those who took part in the Dieppe raid, there is a L. Bateman, on the list Ox&Bucks but as well as wrong intial the army number is wrong so maybe a relative or confusion somewhere over the same surname. Ok I am now offically confused two different army numbers same surname and regiment and middle name starting with L which makes more sense of the Dieppe connection, so going by this its the same guy I assume MK this is posted by you...... Cpl. David L. Bateman 52nd Btn. Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry My granddad, David Bateman was in glider 4 out of the 6 gliders that landed at Pegasus bridge on d-day. His glider landed 8 miles away from the bridge and was later captured I believe on the 7/6/44. He served under Major Howard and there is a memorial at Pegasus bridge Ranville-Benouville Normandy for the men who served in the 6th airborne division, 52nd battalion Oxford and Buckingham Light Infantry. I do not know much about his time at Stalag 357 as I never had the chance to meet my granddad as he died before I was born. If by chance anybody has any more info on David Bateman please let me know. I do know he did a lot of his training in Ilfracombe, Devon and I believe this is where he met his wife, Kathleen Pugsley. On a picture of a glider is a list of ladies names including Kath. Jane Bateman The Wartime Memories Project - The Second World War - The Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry

Help Given what I posted earlier about the differances between the numbers you said 5383417 and number on Dieppe raid list is 5382464........ and the intials well you cleared that up with the full name of your Grandad, so that fits as does the Parent regiment being Ox&Bucks....... from 42 on Dieppe to 44 and pegasus Bridge, now the army number is only out by 48 seems to close for me........ so I reckon that the 24 and 34 have been written wrong somewhere as has the 64 and 71, im pretty sure looking at all the info that your Grandad is the same Bateman. And when I dig it out I will see if this book which covers the commandos roll at Dieppe very well can help, all the best Jason.
From the bottom of my heart thank you for your time . Excellent .. Il never have the pleasure of talking with my grandad , such a great man by all accounts . But I do have the pleasure because of guys like you of following his history . I want to know it all .
