    Hi all,

I'm new to this so I hope I'm posting this in the right spot :P I'm interested if anyone can tell me anything about the Australian 2/1 Field Company and their actions between November 1944 and May 1946? My grandfather was Cpl Francis Joseph Ashby, and this is the period in which he served in New Guinea. I know some basics of what they were doing, but I though I'd ask you guys as you have such a wealth of knowledge and also just in case anyone knew of my grandfather. I've got his service records, but they aren't very detailed which is normal.
Also, if anyone's father/grandfather also served in the 2/1 Field Coy and they have photos, I would be really appreciative if you were willing to share them. My grandfather's photos were destroyed in New Guinea when his tent caught on fire (or so I'm told).

    Thanks guys!

    Hi nelipot,

I would suggest checking out the Australian War Memorial site, they have the official War histories available for downlaod as PDF's: http://www.awm.gov.au/histories/second_world_war/

You could also try getting this book: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Maker-and-Breaker-Grover-2008-WWII-2-1-2-14-Field-Engineer-Company-/360506254248?pt=AU_Non_Fiction_Books_2&hash=item53efd8e3a8 This is also available on AbeBooks: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?kn=%222%2F1+Field+Company%22&sts=t, which you should check out as these copies may be cheaper.

Unfortunately the Unit War Diaries are not available online (and there are no plans to digitise any more than those currently available), but they can be perused at the AWM. They also may copy them for you, (Not sure on this, but one can ask).

Also try a search on the AWM site, for photographs, you may be lucky, as I was and find pictures of your grandfather, you can then obtain copies.
