1st Lothian and Borders Yeomanry WW2

I wonder if you can help with a conundrum that has stalled my family history research?

I’ve discovered from my granddad’s service record that he saw active service in WW2 as part of the 1st Lothian and Borders Yeomanry. My dad remembers him talking about driving a mine clearing tank (Flail tank?), which seems to correlate with his record showing a posting to NWE (where the 1 line of the 1st L and BY used flail tanks?).

However, his record also shows that he is entitled to the ‘Italy’ campaign medal which suggests he may, in fact, have been part of the 2 line of the L and BY on active service in Italy.

Does anyone have any idea:

• If mine clearing tanks were used in Italy by the L and BY?
• If there is any way to tell for definite which of the 2 L and BYs he was with from his service record or where / how I might be able to get this confirmed?

Hello Lynne, welcome to the forum.

As far as I know 2 L&BY didn't use flails in Italy, although 1 squadron of 51 Royal Tank Regiment did.

His service record should show whether he was transferred to the 2 battalion in Italy at any point. Perhaps you could post a scan or photo of the relevant sections ?

I've checked through the 1 Lothians War Diaries for 43-46 and afraid your Grandad's not mentioned - but that's not unusual for other ranks. Do you know which Troop or squadron he was in ?

Thank you so much for reading my post and taking the time to look into it for me. Are these the pages you suggested?
I feel that I have all the pages of his service record (although, let's be honest I'm a complete beginner so what would I know?!) yet I have a sheet saying that 8 pages have been redacted. I understand the section showing his children would be, but any idea what else they might redact?
