Sorry to hijack this post for another chap, but I see there are some knowledgeable people on subject in this thread. Does anyone have any info on 6411790 Private Burt Edward Keogh, 1st Devons. The CWGC has his date of death as 9 May 44 and he is commemorated in Rangoon. He is believed to have been driving an officer and was hit by a bomb/Arty/mortar which killed both. Thanks for any info provided. Regards, Matt
From the Battalion War diary (I only have May's entry sadly): May 9, 1944. 0430 SCRAGGY HILL (RK587127) 0540 hours Enemy attacked “D” Coy. (now cut off on CRETE WEST) with supporting fire from CYPRUS but attack repulsed. Enemy again attacked CRETE WEST and succeeded in occupying forward trenches for a short time before being driven out again. Bn. (less “D” Coy.) relieved by 3/1 G.R. and moved back to RECCE HILL. Day’s casualties:- 3 BORs killed, 13 BORS wounded. Lieut. P.R.Newbury joined Bn. The three casualties were: Pte Keogh Pte. Edward Knight https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2514706/edward-ernest-knight/ Pte. Hubert Willis https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2528533/hubert-wilson-willis/
Hello Bert Keogh was my great uncle , where would I find the entry that lists him as deceased , I’m wondering if what we ( the family ) where always told about how he died is true or was he killed driving an officer or was he killed out in trench or on foot somewhere with battalion ?
Here is Pte. Keogh's CWGC entry. There may not be any actual information about his sad demise, other than on casualty listings. https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2514067/bert-edward-keogh/ The fact that all three men killed on the 9th May are remembered upon the Rangoon War Memorial, means that they had no known grave and their remains were never found at the time or after the war. Other members may know more.
