I'm hoping to find some help in details regarding the above regiment. I have an ancestor, Arthur Crapper, whom I suspect served with the 1st Bn Welsh Regiment and was killed in 1942. The family story is that he was killed on a ship that sank, perhaps transporting prisoners. His grave is recorded on the CWGC website. His death is recorded as sometime between February 13, 1942 and May 20 1942. Does anyone know anything about this regiment? Does this story fit into what is known of the regiment?

Any help or direction anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi

    This may help:

He was probably taken POW during the retreat to the Gazala line (21 Jan 42 to 6 Feb 42), and then died when being transported to the Italian mainland. 13 Feb was the day of the sinking of the SS Ariosto by HMS P.38.

Forum member ADM199 is the expert, he has a lot of the names of those who died in these attacks.

    All the best
