I have had a soldier named Baggaley in my King's Regiment database, who was on standby for the Commandos on the first Chindit expedition. Pte. 3534875 A. Baggaley was originally with the Loyal Regiment. Strong possibility it could be your uncle?

  2. Thanks for this, I am going to look into this and will come back to the thread.

my grandmother had 3 brothers who all served in some capacity during WW2 - Harry (Henry), Walter (also played for Everton post war) and Alec (Alexander).

Here are some pictures of Alex in case it helps glean any information that may help.

I think the cap badge in the second photograph is that of the Royal West Kent Regiment.

  4. thanks for replying - so you don’t think Liverpool Kings ?

Not the badge shown no. Here are some examples of both badges, King's Liverpool first:

3534875 falls in the number block 3511001-3589006 allocated to the Manchester Regiment.

  8. Henry Conrad Baggaley was born 17th Feb 1919 in West Derby. All others are correct, Lilian was my grandmother and Elsie was her sister.

A Rifleman with the initials W E Baggaley served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps and was taken P.o.W. in France in 1940. It may or may not be Walter.

It was Walter that played for Everton.

  14. Yes Walter Edward Baggaley - this is really helpful, thank you.

  15. My dad thinks Walter was in the Navy.

And yes Walter has a successful football playing career that stopped by the war. Post war he played briefly for Everton.

I have just found an article in the Liverpool Echo of 19th August 1946 which says that he served in the Royal Navy. He apparently walked into a reserve game and asked for a trial, they were so impressed with his skills that they put him in the team.

Thank you Simon. I’ve picked up a copy of Jack Lindo’s book Dingle to Delhi which I’ll have finished by the end of today I’m sure. It’s signed by the author and something I’ll treasure.

And the cheque and form for George’s service record went in the post last week. As soon as I get something back I’ll let you know.

Anyone know roughly how long the wait is now? Last time I had to apply for a service record I think it took about 6 months and I was pleasantly surprised it was that quick.

    Hi Rich,

MOD enquiries are taking a long while presently and have been affected quite badly by the Covid-19 situation. You might be in for a fair old wait with this one. Let's hope not.

Hello, I was delighted to discover this site (thanks to Paul Newton) as I am currently trying to piece together my father's time in Burma and India. I still have long way to go and a lot of reading to do to try and join the dots if possible. Meanwhile I have found my father on your excellent list. 14407399 Leonard George Price. I know he was a chindit and with 77 brigade from what he told me and from a comment he wrote in a book on Orde Wingate who visited the brigade on 25 Dec 43 to give a talk on Oliver Cromwell. I see you are seeking info for your database so if I can help, please let me know what you require. I have a few photos but not clear where taken or if 1KLR or 15th para which he joined in March 45. I cannot see him on the photos taken at Dehra Dun though the HQCoy photo shows Pte L Price which does look a bit like him. If this was definitely Nov 45 he would have been with parachute regiment. What an amazing amount of time and work you have all put in on this site. I have just started my research and it is taking over my every hour! Best wishes, Pat

Hello Pat and welcome to the forum. I am very pleased that you have made contact as I have little information about your father.

His service number shows that he enlisted into the General Service Corps for his initial training before being posted to the King's Regiment. (Liverpool). Your father was involved in an action outside the Broadway block on the 28th March 1944 and later gave evidence about the fate of a missing soldier involved in the action, 7983368 Pte Henry Joseph Freeman.

Other than that I know very little and I was unaware that he had joined the 15th (King's) Parachute battalion, but I do know that many of his King's Chindit comrades did.

Anything that you can tell me would be welcome and if you have a photograph of him in uniform, could you please upload it?

There are indeed two L. Prices on my database but only one is L.G. Price. I have updated his entry to show his full name.

    Many thanks,

    Simon
